My name is Tom Cardon, and I am running for Town Councilor At-Large. I have lived in Derry for 34 years and am a retired high school teacher. With my experience on various town committees, I bring valuable knowledge to the Town Council. Currently, I serve as the Secretary of the Net Zero Committee and have been involved with both of Derry’s energy committees for 16 years. The projects we’ve worked on have saved the town nearly a million dollars annually in energy costs. Our latest project—a solar array at the closed Derry landfill—will produce enough electricity to power all our municipal buildings.
I regularly attend Town Council and School Board meetings, and this year, I served on the Derry Schools Fiscal Advisory Board. I’m proud of the committee’s work, especially our efforts to level-fund the school district’s operating budget. I’ve also supported the School Board's initiatives to address the critical needs of our schools’ infrastructure.
The following issues are important to our town, and I will work to support them:
I ask for your support in the upcoming election.
Sincerely,
Tom Cardon
I've lived in Derry for 18 years, and I am running for Councilor at Large. I want to help our town be the welcoming and prosperous town it has the potential to be. I want to help the Council as it continues to build an inclusive, caring civically engaged community. I want to help create affordable housing with resilience to climate change, find ways to ensure our most vulnerable citizens have the help and access to the resources they need, and I want to find ways to bring down property taxes without taking anything away from our schools. I fully support our teachers, and I think that all of our children deserve to have access to a good, well-rounded curriculum in our public schools. I also want to help position the town to be ready for full cannabis legalization when it happens here.
Hello Derry! My name is Jen Theroux, and I am running for a 3 year term on the Derry School Board. I am currently serving a short-term appointment following a resignation of a board member this past fall. I am excited to continue to contribute to the Derry School Board, and I am confident my skills and past experiences make me a valuable addition to the board.
My husband and I have been homeowners in Derry for the past thirteen years. We have three young children that all attend, or will be attending, Derry Public Schools. I am a strong advocate for public education, and I am looking forward to balancing the needs of our students and teachers with the concerns of the Derry taxpayers to ensure that we have a school district that we all can be proud of.
My past educational and professional experiences have provided me with a skill set that makes me a valuable asset to the Derry School Board. I have a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction and a Master of Social Work degree. I’m also a licensed independent clinical social worker in the State of NH. I have worked in higher education, community mental health, and inpatient medical settings. Most recently, I worked at Pinkerton Academy as a school social worker. Currently, I am a stay-at-home parent to my three young children. I have a vested interest in ensuring that the Derry School District is providing a high quality education to students and that the teachers in our district feel seen, supported and empowered.
Moving forward, I feel strongly that the Derry School District needs to address facilities issues that have accumulated over the years by investing in a capital reserve fund. The district also needs to prioritize long term planning for curriculum by investing in programming that is evidence based, taught with fidelity throughout the district, and that prepares students well for national and state assessments while respecting the professionalism and autonomy of our district's teachers. I hope to play a part in improving the community and culture of the Derry Public Schools by being a voice to students and teachers in the district while balancing the real concerns of Derry's taxpayers. Thank you for reading this, and I hope to have your vote on March 11!
My name is Karen Rand, and I am a proud, 30 year resident of this wonderful town. I am running for one of the three-year terms on the Derry School Board, and I am eager to bring my experience in project management and real estate to serve our community.
As a mother of four Pinkerton graduates, and now a proud grandparent with a grandchild in Derry schools, I deeply understand the importance of providing every student with the best possible educational experience. The Derry School District has given my family incredible opportunities, and I want to work hard to ensure that every student, teacher, and family in our community has access to the same level of excellence.
My involvement with the CASA program has further reinforced my commitment to advocating for children in need, particularly those who are facing challenges in their educational journey. Every child deserves to have a voice and the support they need to grow into their full potential.
I am committed to working collaboratively with fellow elected officials to find practical, innovative solutions to the challenges facing our schools. From addressing infrastructure needs to ensuring the continued success of our dedicated educators, I will work tirelessly to ensure that Derry’s education system is one that supports all students, at every stage of their academic journey.
I would be honored to earn your trust and your vote this March, and together, we can continue to build a brighter future for Derry’s children!
Thank you,
Karen Rand
My name is Jamie Carreau and I’m running for a 2 year seat on the School Board. I have lived in Derry for 21 years and I graduated from Pinkerton, where I even met my husband.
Like many others in Derry, I was concerned about high taxes and maintaining the quality of our schools. When I learned that we would have five open seats on the board, I felt compelled to step up for my community. I love my town, and our outstanding teachers. Many of whom have had a significant impact on my children’s lives.
Being an Autism mom, special education is extremely important to me. Between my 2 kids, we have been enrolled in 6 out of the 9 Derry public schools including DVS. For all of these reasons, I think I would be a good voice for the School Board.
My kids have grown up in the Derry School system, and it will be an honor to serve on the board, if given the opportunity.
Hello Derry!
My name is Jenna Paradise and I am running for a 2-year seat on the Derry School Board. I am currently serving a short-term position on the board for a member who resigned back in the late fall, and I am hoping to stay on for a full term.
My family and I have lived in Derry for almost 12 years, and our two children are both Pinkerton students (Go Astros!) I have been involved in the school and community for pretty much the whole time we have lived here, by being part of the PTA’s, a substitute teacher for almost 9 years, attending many local events, and being on the board of Derry Homegrown Farm & Artisan Market for a 7-year term. I have followed the school board and school related issues for years, but while my children were small it was always difficult to commit to more than just the occasional meeting or watching from home. With older children, comes more
opportunity to devote more time to the things that I care about, one being the future of our school district.
I feel that my time spent in this community, particularly working continuously with the PTA’s and within the school district gives me a unique perspective to add to the school board. I want to be a strong advocate for both the children of this town and their teachers, as they both deserve the best we can give them. I strongly support fixing all the maintenance issues that have been adding up over the years, so we can get them out of the way and be able to focus on the students. That being said, I also understand the economic pinch that our taxpayers are feeling. While serving for my short time on the Fiscal Advisory Committee, I voted to make sure our budget was at or below default. By making fiscally sound decisions, we can hopefully invest any money we have left into a fund so to hopefully never be in this position again.
Those who serve on the School Board are volunteers who feel that their voice could be beneficial in the decisions affecting our children. I hope to have your vote so that my voice can be one of them.
